Visiting Walkern

The village itself is a lovely place to visit and is popular with walkers, cyclists and photographers alike! There are fascinating information boards dotted throughout the village, showing photographs of Walkern in days gone by. The village has a small museum and an art gallery. It is also home to St Mary the Virgin - one of the oldest village churches in Hertfordshire - with a Saxon wall and rare chalk rood (crucifix) dating back to the middle 10th century. St Mary’s also houses a fine Purbeck marble effigy, most probably of William de Lanvalei, one of the Magna Carta barons. Beside the church is the village ford, where you can often spot our kingfisher!
